HIGHLAND LIGHT: Memories of Scotland

Creating this series of paintings has been a joy. I only needed to go to my studio, play a Celtic music tape, and get lost in the painting, to transport myself back to the Scottish Highlands. Our visit there in 1997 was brief, but quite long enough for me to fall in love with this beautiful land.

The constantly changing light as the fog and clouds moved among the hills, the moments of brilliance when the sunlight broke through, captivated me and became a focal point for this body of work. Often a particular light effect lasted only seconds, but my photographs provided a starting point for each painting. My intention was not to simply reproduce the camera's images, but to use them to trigger the memories, emotions, atmosphere, that I had experienced, and hopefully convey that to you.
